EasyDECON™ Helps Rid Hart Senate building of Anthrax
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., November 16, 2001 – EasyDECON™, a decontamination foam produced by EnviroFoam Technologies (EFT) of Huntsville, Ala., has successfully been used for the remediation of stairwells and freight elevators in the Hart Senate office building in Washington, D.C. Peter Beucher, President and CEO of EnviroFoam, today announced the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected EasyDECON because of successful test results over the past several years and actual remediation efforts on Capitol Hill over the last several weeks.
The foam, developed at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., was selected after Federal officials decided last week to begin some remediation methods in the building rather than wait and rely solely on chlorine dioxide gas.
Earlier this month, Beucher announced EasyDECON was successfully used for the first time commercially, eliminating anthrax from the mailrooms of the Ford and Dirkson Congressional office buildings in Washington, D.C. The EPA has contracted with EFT for materials, equipment and technical support in the remediation of contaminated federal buildings. EasyDECON is being used on the Capitol Hill and in other remediation efforts under and EPA, Emergency Use Permit.
EasyDECON was chosen by the EPA not only because it kills the anthrax spore, but because it is safe, environmentally friendly and the only remediation material tested that did not severely damage the office environment. Additionally, the foam can be applied easily and quickly, with complete coverage over large areas such as walls and ceilings. The moist foam clings or swells for sufficient time to effectively kill the contamination.
EFT, headquartered in Huntsville, Ala., is a licensee of the Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories for the commercialization of the decontamination technology developed by Sandia.
Sandia's development of the formulation was funded by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) through the NNSA's Chemical and Biological National Security Program.
Sandia is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000. Within its main facilities in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., Sandia has major research and development responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.
