WAFF: Meth labs can pop up anywhere, and the toxic chemicals and remnants of deadly labs can linger for years.
But one Huntsville company has created a chemical to destroy meth molecules even after they've been removed. WAFF 48 News Reporter Robyn Mcglohn got an inside look at Crystal Clean.
It's one of the most dangerous drugs known to man: meth. It's an epidemic in the U.S. and right here in North Alabama. Unsuspecting users are arrested in their make shift meth labs, their homes. Then the contaminated house is left to a landlord or worse, sold to an unsuspecting buyer.
EFT's Kevin Irvine: They have two choices, demolish the property or reclaim it.
WAFF: And that's where Kevin Irvine and his company's product come in.
Irvine: Part 1, part 2, part 3.
WAFF: Crystal Clean is a three part component sold in Huntsville and shipped in a bucket to companies across the country mandated to clean former meth labs.
Irvine: Traditional meth remediators right now sometimes require remediators to come in three or four times to scrub things down and they still can't get it clean, and we do it in one application, neutralize the meth to non-detectable levels.
WAFF: A thick foam covers the inside walls, floors and fixtures neutralizing the meth molecules to below a level the state says is safe to live in.
Irvine: You must prove through industrial hygienist reports the property is below .5 micrograms before you can reclaim it.
WAFF: And your product can get it below .5?
Irvine: Every time, without fail.
WAFF: Without fail, and for a fraction of the cost of other products, Irvine says a 1500 square foot home will need about 8 [buckets to clean]. Some say, it's a small price to pay.
